Occupation: Supervising Clinician of Outpatient Mental Health Unit/Psychotherapist
How did you first hear about CDHR?: I believe it was at the CDHR booth at the Haddam Neck Fair years ago.
When and why did you start volunteering for CDHR?: I started volunteering one year ago this month. I've always loved horses, especially drafts and I just wanted to be around them. And, of course wanting to support the work of the rescue.
What's the most rewarding aspect of being a CDHR volunteer?: Every Saturday afternoon I have this mindful moment. I pull in to the CDHR driveway, listening to the dirt and rocks crunch under my car tires as I pull in for my shift. I exit my car, wondering what I will encounter that day. I stand there and gaze around at the paddocks, feed pens and run-ins. Usually I see Thomas and Marshy standing to the front of their paddocks as I breath in the pungent air. Energy fills my body and I think "I'm so happy to be here."
Many things compete for the top spot here. I get to spend time every Saturday afternoon with the most beautiful horses. I am building relationships with some really wonderful people, both those I do shift with and the extended CDHR family.
What tops the list is that the rescue is focused on rehab and adoption. It's hard to see some of the horses go but it is great to be part of the process that places them with someone/people who will treasure them and treat them well.
Do you have a favorite CDHR horse and why?: I love them all but I do have an appreciation of their individual, endearing characteristics. For example, Thomas' curiosity, I've secretly nicknamed him George. I have had a soft spot for Bob because he always had such sadness in his eyes. One day I was standing by the feed pen where he was finished eating but waiting to go back to the paddock. He didn't want me to pet him but when I turned around and I had my hand on the side of the feed pen I felt his muzzle on my hand. I thought "in your time Bob, I'll be here when you're ready." His eyes haven't been as sad in the past couple of months. :-) Marshy and Callie are just so sweet and mellow. Kai that little mischief maker.....
