Hello, My Name is Harry (Adopted July 2023)

Harry is an approximately 23-year-old Percheron gelding rescued from an auction in PA on May 10, 2022. He was one of five lives we saved that day, and we lovingly call them “The Variety Pack.”

Unfortunately, Harry caught our eye at the auction because he was in such poor shape-emaciated and covered with fresh and old wounds all over his body. To our surprise, the man who brought Harry to auction told us he was a great workhorse and was working up until the day he was brought to auction. Although the physical signs were obvious, our hearts still broke to hear he was working in his condition.

When you meet sweet Harry, it is clear that he worked long and hard hours with terribly fitting tack. He has bit scars on the corners of his mouth, large scars on both stifles, scars on his shoulders, and even under his tail from his crupper.
The biggest mark with Harry is the one he will leave on your heart.

Harry is a very quiet, sweet boy. He gets along with any horses he has been with at the rescue without any conflict. It took him some time to understand he was not here to work every day and that he could relax, sleep, heal and allow us to love him. He has been called a big, cuddly teddy bear multiple times since his arrival.

During Harry’s initial health exam with Dr. Golub, she diagnosed him with Atrial Fibrillation, and he displayed some early signs of heart failure with coughing from fluid in his lungs. Those symptoms are well controlled now with daily Furosemide. He also is on daily Equioxx to treat some chronic aches and pains, which keeps him comfortable. Harry has hoof care done in stocks (no sedation), but we are hoping that working with him on the ground over time will change.

We are happy to announce that Harry is available for adoption as a companion. Harry is looking for a loving home where he can live out his days of retirement, where he can be spoiled and loved. He’s our big goofy boy, otherwise known as “Pigpen” around the farm, as he thoroughly enjoys and is proud of the fact that he is the dirtiest horse at the rescue.
