Meet Trick & Treat (Adopted July 2023)
Two of the Halloween Herd Rescued From an Auction

On Friday, Oct. 29th at 2 am, we headed out to a horse auction. 18 hours later we arrived home with five draft horses that needed us the most. Read their story.
Every horse at an auction has lost everything they knew, everything that made them feel safe. The stress and emotional trauma they go through puts a strain on their mind and body. When we rescue them they are worn out, their spirits are broken, most have given up. It’s as if they know they are at the end.

Once they arrive at the rescue, we think they understand that something has changed. They are surrounded by our intake team, who help them feel loved and wanted. One thing that is extremely important for these auction rescue horses is, literally, a respite. They are so exhausted and have been so worn down by what they’ve experienced; some have even been through multiple auctions or ownership transfers prior to landing at this one.

Welcome home our "Halloween Herd." You are safe. You are loved.

Trick & Treat (Adopted)
Age: Both are 13 years
Height: Trick 18.2hh & Treat 18.1hh
Breed: Belgian

Health & Care: It seems Treat had a very severe accident in his past life judging by some physical signs. Trick has a chronic neuromuscular syndrome known as ‘shivers.”

Hooves:
Both Trick &Treat are barefoot, and both boys need sedation for the farrier —Trick has Farrier work in the stocks because of his shivers, and Treat is done standing. But they are making progress. Treat recently allowed all four hooves to be handled and picked without sedation.

Suitable For: A soft, loving home. Available as companions.

Enjoys: Both boys enjoy affection, cuddles, and quiet time spent with the volunteers. Trick is the more curious boy and likes to be in the middle of all gatherings.

Working On: Trick & Treat are continuing to get healthy and adjusting to this new life of love, rest, and not working.

Fun Fact: Belgian Draft Horses out number all other draft breeds combined in the United States. History shows that Belgians are the most direct lineal descendants of the “Great Horse” of medieval times.
